Begum Jaan Movie Review & Rating, Public Response – Once again the versatile and talented Bollywood actress, Vidya Balan has proved that she can transform and depict herself to whichever character she is given, with her latest released movie Begum Jaan. Even though her previous flick did not show any magic on box office, but the actress is not afraid to experiment with her character.
The movie opens with a disturbing incident in Connaught Palace, New Delhi in the year 2016. The film rewinds three years back where India is in a midst of facing the bloody aftermath of a partition post-independence. Sir Cyril Radcliffe has been entrusted with the task of dividing the nation into two parts.
However, the line of partition threatens the existence of a brothel owned by Begum Jaan (Vidya Balan). Soon, in the middle of the story, things take an ugly turn when they are slapped with the notice of the government which says that the ‘Kotha’ must go away to make a clear way for Indian and Pakistan. With no other option left, Begum Jaan and her group of Prostitutes choose the rebellious path to defend the place which they call their home and had a strong bondage.
Begum Jaan Movie Review
Director of the movie, Srijit Mukherjee, the man behind the National Award winning movie, Rajkahini ventures into Bollywood with its Hindi adaptation Begum Jaan. Even though the concept of the flick is quite bold and strong, the movie misses out with a little backdrop about every other character except Vidya Balan. Thus we face some failed instances to feel for the character and reach out to them simply because we never knew them in the first place.
Below we have shared Begum Jaan Movie Review by some well-known critics.

BEGUM JAAN has its share of shining moments. On the flip side, there are imperfections that are hard to ignore: On the whole, BEGUM JAAN has curiosity-value and shock-value, both. Despite minor hiccups, BEGUM JAAN is a compelling watch with a hard hitting narrative and bravura performances as its USPs. The moderate costing of the film should also ensure smooth sailing for its investors.

A plot that could have turned into a powerful allegory – you divide people at your peril, for no lasting gains – is run aground. And the climax is full of fire and faux brimstone and lots of speechifying, the ladies of easy virtue becoming a gun-toting ‘fauj’, before invoking a certain Rajasthani ‘rani’ who currently is the subject of a film with a troubled trajectory. Such a waste of a talented bunch of actors. And of Balan, who tries hard to invest some feeling into a role which turns into a cliché the moment the film opens.

It’s a good period and story to revisit because even 70-years after Partition, anything around it still piques interest. Then again, here the narrative deals less with the horror of the divide and serves more as an ode to the spiritedness of Begum; widowed in her childhood and sold to a brothel. Also, Mukherji is revisiting his Bengali film Rajkahini

Begum Jaan held a lot of promise for me after that scintillating trailer. However, the movie failed to replicate the trailer’s tight framework, and instead, makes an overdramatic mess of such an important chapter in our history. It’s a pity since Vidya Balan is really good here, and the premise looks promising on paper. Avoid Begum Jaan, unless you have a thing for overdramatic fare.
Begum Jaan Ratings
Begum Jaan relies more on building up moments rather than the reality. The cinematography effortlessly captures the Indo- Pak division in the Begum Jaan’s world. The first half of the movie moves at a slower pace but by the post-interval, there are several impactful events that keep audiences invested. Also, the songs of the movie are well placed according to the events, which help it in taking the story forward. Overall the two and half hour movie Begum Jaan has Vidya Balan in good form but lacks cohesiveness as a complete story.
Begum Jaan is rated with 3 out of 5 stars
Begum Jaan Public Response
Although Begum Jaan had to witness a fierce competition with Hollywood action movie Fast & Furious 8 showing a fair Public response on its first day of release. The first-day collection of Vidya Balan’s Begum Jaan is pretty decent, where major cities showed 50-60% occupancy. People are excited to witness the post-independence story on a silver screen once again in the form of Begum Jaan.
